Women in the United States Armed Forces

The United States is the land of the free. That is why it is always ahead of the pack when it comes to acknowledgement of human rights and provision of equal opportunities to wiling and qualified candidates. When it comes to women in the military, the Armed Forces of the country serves as a model that almost all other military forces worldwide are looking up to. For the longest time, the US military has been accepting women for the service. Time and again, women in the military have proven that they could do whatever their men counterparts could do. Talk about women power.

In history, the first woman soldier in the US armed forces was Massachusetts’ Deborah Sampson. She enlisted in the Continental Army under the name Robert Shurtliff. The woman served three years within the Revolutionary War. She found strategic ways to conceal her real gender to doctors and some colleagues. When her real identity was revealed, then President George Washington still awarded her an honorable discharge. Later on in her life, she gave lectures on her amazing experiences as the first American woman in the military. Thus, she instantly emerged as a women’s rights champion.

Another woman followed suit. In the middle of the 19ty century, another woman disguised as a man to be able to enter the armed forces. It was Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, who enlisted under the name Private Lyons Wakeman. Her complete account as a woman in the Union Army was described in the book ‘An Uncommon Soldier.’

To recap, during the initial years of women in the armed forces in the US, most female soldiers enlisted under male pseudonyms. In 1898, there was apolitical move to recognize women’s rights to serve and be enlisted in the military. Bu it was only in 1941 that the Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps was founded in the country. Political moves and calls to give women equal rights in the military ensued. In 1943, legislation was finally passed to remove the ‘auxiliary’ word from the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Thus, women were finally made a significant part of the US military. Women soldiers took great responsibilities in the battle in the World War that followed. About 350,000 women served in the American military during World War II.

In 1989, the first woman soldier was assigned to finally command American soldiers in an actual military battle. It was the invasion of Panama. The woman was tasked to lead a force that consisted of 30 men and women. Then, the Gulf War in 1991 served as a pivotal period for women’s role in the US Armed Forces. This time, women soldiers were fully commanding attention of the world. There were numerous women in the military. Up to 40,000 women have been serving in almost each role offered by the military.

Many came under fire, but still a number of them were not allowed to take part in the most deliberate ground engagements. But now, American women soldiers are obviously in full swing.

Women in British Armed Forces

Women were allowed to join the British Armed Forces in almost all roles. This is except those roles that are commanding primary duty to get nearby or kill an enemy. Thus, there are women in the infantry, commando, armor, Special Air Service and Airfield Defense, among the few. They are also allowed access to the special force’s support units. They are also now cleared to join Special Reconnaissance Regiment, the unpopular branch of the United Kingdom Special Forces. To date, women account for about 9% of the entire UK armed forces. Female combatants could be found across the country’s long military history.

One of the pioneers was Queen Boudica. She led Iceni tribe warriors against a host of Roman forces in 62 AD.  Her legacy has been often quoted and used to support arguments linked to calls for full acceptance of women in the national military. In 1776, about 5,000 women were accompanying British forces. Most of those women were spouses of high-ranking military officers. Many were plain wives of serving soldiers. During the time, women were only left behind in the camp while their spouses faced action. Some of them also served to accompany baggage trains, also serving as nurses or cooks.

The British Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps was established during World War I. The body was first deployed in France in 1917. At that time, many officers and high-ranking officials were already considering giving men and women fairly equal treatment within the front. In the said war, women served as cooks, clerical staff, and medical personnel. They were still not allowed to become officers amid numerous disputes regarding compensation. The Women’s Royal Naval Service was formed about the same time, but was later disbanded in 1919. The body attended to administrative support and catering. They were also electrician and communications personnel.

The Auxiliary Territorial Service was formed in 1938. There were about 20,000 women in service, though they held non-combatant roles. Incorporated in the said service was the highly important First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. The following year, the service was reformed, this time with higher range of available shore-based opportunities. By 1949, women were formally recognized as permanent in the British armed forces. However, full combatant roles were still exclusive to men soldiers. Women’s Royal Army Corps emerged. 1950 came and women enjoyed normalized ranks of men in the military.

In 1992, women organizations in the military were disbanded. Then, women officers and soldiers were effectively distributed and scattered across units where men soldiers have been actively serving. In the 21st century, no less than the media is emphasizing the women’s role in armed forces as mothers of the military. Take note that the British Armed Forces’ commander-in-chief is a woman in the person of Queen Elizabeth II. However, her role and position is considered only nominal.

Today, many more women are aiming to join the ranks of military men. Women power truly lives. Perhaps, women have proven themselves right when they assert that what men could do, they could also do.

What It Takes to be in the Armed Forces

Have you always admired military men? Do you want to be one of them in the future? Getting a career in the armed forces could be truly rewarding and promising. Soldiers are considered living heroes no matter what country you are in. That is because such men in service are always risking their lives to defend and protect the interest of the country and the government. They fight invaders and they help make sure the overall peace and orderliness in the society would be in its proper order. It is truly a noble deed to join the military.

If you want to be part of the armed forces, do not suppress your feelings. Get on to realize your ambition now. Enlist in the military and be trained to be a part of the service. It is not as exhilarating and as tiring as it seems. But it is truly rewarding enough. If you have the drive and the passion, you would not mind subjecting yourself into much disciplinary action. Besides, many men and women attest the military training makes them more of better people. You would learn how to strive more to attain excellence, honor, and integrity.

What does it take to be in the military? Here is a simple checklist that could help guide you as you contemplate to decide whether you would go and proceed to join the service or just find other professions that could suit your personality and personal purpose.

Nationalism. You would not make a good solider if you do not love the country. You have to defend the nation, its government, and its people from internal and external forces that threaten them. You have to be loyal and patriotic to make it better. This could serve as you basic motivation along the way.

Determination. The road to being a military person is often rough and relentless. That is why you should be determined enough to make it. You should be decisive and firm to stand by the important decisions you make. Without this trait in your personality, it would certainly be hard and even impossible for you to attain your goals, as always.

Physical endurance. As mentioned, the training to become a soldier could be rigorous and exhilarating. You would be subjected to a series of physical examinations to make sure you are physically qualified and ready to make it. Long physical training could be essential and necessary.

Intelligence. You should not think the military is just after physical endurance and agility. You should of course have sharp mind and healthy line of thinking. Battles fought by the military involve so much mental exhilaration as well. That is why you should prepare well for it. You would need to study and to learn more.

Luck. This one is quite relative. You could not measure your luck but you could bet on it. Just be focused on your goal to join the armed forces and intend to run until the finish line. If you make it, then luck is in your hands and if not, you could keep on going or divert to another profession.

What is Armed Forces Day?

Members of the armed forces of every country need to be honored and admired for committing their lives to protect the interest of the people and the government. Some people and governments consider members of the organization as living heroes. No one could contest the fact that soldiers are considered as important elements of the society. Governments would do anything just to honor and acknowledge the heroism and dedication of the members of the body. This is the reason why a special day is dedicated to soldiers annually. This is the main reason why there is Armed Forces Day.

What is Armed Forces Day? It is a special day assigned for the commemoration and recognition of soldiers’ unique and necessary sacrifices for the good of all. Many countries and governments all over the planet are holding annual Armed Forces Day as a way of venerating and honoring their respective military forces. Thus, the day is considered an important and emotional one for many soldiers. They are human, too. They have basic needs and they have families who are always standing behind them through thick and thin. In many cases, the day is used not just to honor the soldiers but also to honor the families and people that are behind them along the way.

Most countries celebrate Armed Forces Day, although there are differences to the timing and the manner. In some nations, the day is considered a public holiday, while in others, the day is special but not declared a special public holiday. Strong countries with bases in select regions and countries try to make it a point to have their base soldiers celebrate the day on the commemoration back home. Some countries have specific dates for the celebration, while others designate certain weekends of specific months for the day.

In the United Kingdom, the first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on June 27, 2009. The day replaced the Veterans’ Day, which in turn was first celebrated in 2006. Why the date? June 27 is also the anniversary of the Victoria Cross investiture ceremony. From then on, the country is allotting significant celebrations for the day. The first celebration of the day was held at Chatham Historic Dockyard, attended by no less than the Prime Minister and other officials of the government.

The United States is more sentimental of its veneration to its soldiers. It has been celebrating and commemorating Armed Forces Day since 1949. Every year, the country vows to its soldiers every third Saturday of May. The date also commemorates the consolidation of the US Department of Defense’s military services. The celebration is usually observed through staging of parades, air shows, receptions, and open houses. In 2009, the country observed its 50th Armed Forces Day. The celebration centered in Torrance, California, where there was the longest-running commemoration co-sponsored by the city.

In other parts of the world, Armed Forces Day is much publicized and commemorated. Nations and governments obviously recognize the significant contribution of soldiers to the society and to nations as whole.

Travel and Vacation for Armed Forces Personnel

Everybody needs a break. That is why vacation holidays are considered important. If all professionals and employees enjoy such perks, why would members of the armed forces be deprived of such perks? There are now numerous vacation packages that are offered exclusively to military personnel. Demand for such travel and vacation packages has grown significantly through the years that it is now considered a thriving and expanding market segment of travel. No wonder, many soldiers are looking forward to that time of the year when they are allowed to go home and pack with the family to go out of town for an enjoyable vacation spree.

Where to head when taking an armed forces vacation? If you are a military man, or woman, who plans to get to a vacation holiday, you could aim to enjoy vacations anywhere. That of course would depend on your budget and allowed time. There could be numerous attractive tourism and vacation spots in your locality or you could decide to hop cities or even countries to do so. Let your imagination run wild. Explore places and islands you have not gone to before or enjoy the time at your favorite vacation destination with your loved ones.

You could opt to travel alone or with your family and friends. You could arrange for your vacation on your own or you could opt to hire the services of a reliable and trustworthy travel agency. Either way, you would be the one deciding where to go and what to do to have fun. In any way, it is important that you prepare sufficient budget for the entire vacation package. And because you are from the military, expect to enjoy many other perks like huge discounts and government subsidies on specific trips and accommodations. Before you go to the trip, it would be best if you would determine available freebies and discounts for you and how to avail them.

Your family is of course logically as excited as you are with regards to this upcoming vacation. That is why you should share the fun, laughter, and excitement together. Strive and plan to spend some quality time with them. For a while, it would help if you would set aside your being a military man. During the vacation spree, just be a man of the family and not a loyal and responsible national fighter. Enjoy, relax, and have fun.

Travel and vacation for members of the armed forces is essential. This is the time they get to recharge their energies. Everyone needs to loosen up and wind up. The government acknowledges the fact that everyone needs to occasionally rest and reinvigorate. Take your time and make the most out of the opportunity. All work and no play would definitely make any soldier dull.

Your family for sure has also bee waiting for the holiday vacation for the longest time. The vacation trip could be the best present and treat you could give them today.

The United States and Its Armed Forces

The United State military or armed forces are the unified body of all military forces in the country. It was first established in the second Continental Congress in aim of defending the then emerging and newly formed nation from the British Empire during the American Revolutionary War. In 1775, the Marine Corps, Navy, and Army were commissioned in anticipation of pending declaration of independence the following year. In 1790, the Coast Guard was formed originally as the Revenue Cutter Service. It was a long way before the US military emerged to become what it is today, the greatest and most powerful military body in the world, or probably the universe.

The structure is basically familiar to all. The President serves as the commander-in-chief. The Department of Defense serves as the major organ that carries out the overall military policy of the country. After the September terrorist attacks, the Department of Homeland Security was formed to consolidate and coordinate civilian military contributions to counter internal and external national threats. The US armed forces is the force to reckon, admired, respected, and looked up to by all other military bodies in the world.

Currently, the US military is being comprised of up to three million personnel. About half of those are in the reserve. Because of its great scale and volume, it is not surprising that the US armed forces has the record of being among the biggest military organizations in the world in terms of total number of personnel. It draws its basic manpower from a huge pool of military volunteers. Conscription is therefore not a present source of personnel. About $711 billion of funds every year is received by the US military every year in the form of funds that constitute up to half of global military expenses.

As a whole, the US force owns huge quantities of modern and sophisticated warfare equipment. These powerful machineries further make the military more forceful and authoritative. The equipment makes the US military superior in terms of power projection and defense. It should be observed that annually, a significant fraction of the country’s budget is allocated to further advancement and procurement of more military assets and gadgets. The reach of the armed forces is continuously extending, reaching as far as the other continents. Through the years, the US military has built its strong portfolio of reliable equipment and weaponry.

It is the utmost dream of most American males to be part of the military. Women also start to do the same. In fact, part of the current evolution of the US Armed Forces is the inclusion of women as officers. Female soldier are given more opportunities and responsibilities now. This is not in any way surprising because for some time, the institution and the rest of the country has been actively fighting off and curtailing discrimination in any form.

Even gays and lesbians could now find their selves equal opportunities in the military. Thus, the US force is a great and superior one.

The Sea Armed Forces

The armed forces of every nation make it a point that all areas are properly covered. The land mass are being taken cared by the army or foot soldiers while the skies are being diligently patrolled by the air force which leaves the seas in the capable hands of the navy. Let’s take a look at some concepts regarding this service from the US Armed Forces.

The United States Navy or simply USN is regarded as the sea brand of the US forces. As per documentations done on December 31, 2008 the US Navy is comprised of 331,682 personnel in active duty and about 124,000 that is part of the Navy Reserve. It is equipped with 283 ships utilized in active service and a stacking figure of 3,700 aircrafts. The USN boasts of having the largest battle fleet per tonnage in the world. It is even stronger and more powerful than the next thirteen combined altogether. It is also in possession of the largest carrier fleet which is at eleven and one being under construction.

The Navy is a descendant of the Continental Navy which was founded during the period of the American Revolutionary War. After the war, the Navy was separated from its mother organization. It is the US Constitution that provides the legal basis for a sea-oriented form of military service and has given Congress the power for provision and maintenance of a navy.

Congress had to act when the problem regarding Barbary Coast pirates started to plague the business and enterprise around American shipping. It passed a certain Naval Act of 1794 which triggered the construction and maintenance of six frigates. The ships provided were utilized to put a halt at the detrimental pirate activity within the Coast of Barbary. During the 20th century American seaborne and naval capacity was fully showcased via the tour of the Great White Fleet in 1907 up to 1909.

At present the USN maintains its grasp of global power and leadership by having deployments across the globe. The involved areas are East Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The US Navy has been consistently described as being a blue water entity with the competency and capability to induce force in various regions around the world. It is highly regarded as moving force that propagates the advancement of peace while ably responding to times of regional crises. These are reasons why it is an integral part of American foreign and defense policy.

The management and administration of the United States Navy is handled by the Department of Navy which is under the authority of the Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy is an important division of the Department of Defense. The Chief of Naval Operations can be determined via the ranking of naval offices.

As an organization, the Navy aims to maintain, train, equip naval forces that should have the capacity to win wars, stop aggression, and maintain freedom within the seas. It is also obligated to defend and protect the US and its allies and facilitate ease of movement throughout the oceans. The Navy is a vital cog in keeping the armed forces of the US in good and smooth running condition.

The Regulars Of HM Armed Forces

Every national leadership has but one goal in this world. This is to make sure that the general interest and safety of its constituents is met at all times. That is why the importance of having competent armed forces should be given thorough and high emphasis. Let’s take a look at how the UK oversees the security of its land areas via its military force.

The British Army is the armed force division of the country that is responsible for monitoring all levels of land security and safety. It was born after the joining of two kingdoms in 1707 namely that of England and Scotland and was collectively known as the Kingdom of Great Britain. After the union of the two kingdoms, the newly formed British Army incorporated existing Regiments from both England and Scotland and was duly administered by the War Office from London. Ever since 1963 the joint regiments were managed by the Ministry of Defense.

The composition of the British Army is around 112,100 regular soldiers which consist of a trained strength of 100,200 and a trained requirement of 102,200. This also includes 3,600 Gurkhas and 34,000 Territorial Army leading to a grand total of about 146,000 soldiers as of June 2009. Since the conception of the reservist Territorial Army in 1908, the full-time component of the British Army has been regarded to as the Regular Army. There is continuous deployment of this army all over the globe’s war plagued areas as part of the country’s contribution to both the United Nations Peacekeeping forces and the expeditionary forces. Countries that are part of this deployment include the likes of Germany, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Cyprus.

It is noticeable that compared to other armed force services like the Royal Marines, the Royal Air Force, and the Royal Navy, the British Army has no inclusion of Royal in its title. The reason behind this is of historical character meaning that during the past the British Armies were actually composed of individually established corps and regiments. However, at present a lot of the regiments and corps have been given the Royal prefix and has been occupied by members of the Royal Family having senior positions.

There has been a widely recognized nickname for a British soldier and this is termed as Tommy Atkins or it can be shortened to Tommy. The origin of such tag can be attributed to a specimen army form wherein the detail of a certain Private Thomas Atkins of No 6 Company, 23rd Regiment of Foot was filled in and was circulated by the orders of Adjutant-General Sir Harry Calvert to all units in 1815. Current members of the army in UK are now commonly called as Toms or Tom while the British press calls the soldiers as squaddies. In the British Army magazine identified as the Soldier there is a regular cartoon strip known as Tom which depicts the daily endeavors of a British soldier.

The armed forces of each nation follow a strict system of values and policies. This is their guiding principle on a daily basis as they diligently attend to their national and global obligations.

The Armed Forces and Women: What a Long Journey

Women have been trying to enter the armed forces in many parts of the world for the longest time. In history, it is noted that the initiative could be traced back to about 4,000 years. The role of women also differed throughout different nations and cultures. It should also be noted that women have been playing various roles in the armed forces, from warrior women in the ancient times to women officers who are now serving in conflicts. They are also given the opportunity to take part in combatant operations in the military. An example of which is the previous war in Iraq.

The role of women in the military has always been full of controversies. This is despite the various roles they have been playing in the armies of the recent societies. Their role in the armed forces, especially in combat has always been scrutinized and highly publicized. It was only in the recent times that have been awarded the right to take prominent roles especially in the contemporary and current military structure. In fact, more and more countries are now starting to further expand roles played and assumed by women in their respective militaries. Thus, the debates about women’s equal rights in the military continue.

Role of women in combatant positions have gone contentious in contemporary military settings. That is throughout the globe. Many countries still exclude them in their military bodies. However, women are in fighting mode. It seems that they would never cease and give up to further prove their worth and potential in handling positions and responsibilities that were once excusive to men. They seem to be always in competition with men, though they say time and again that competing is not their agenda, but service is.

It was only in 1989 that the first woman soldier was assigned to finally command American soldiers in an actual military battle.

In the United Kingdom, it was in 1992 that women organizations in the military were disbanded. Then, women officers and soldiers were effectively distributed and scattered across units where men soldiers have been actively serving. In the 21st century, no less than the media is emphasizing the women’s role in armed forces as mothers of the military.

Today, many more British women are aiming to join the ranks of military men. Women power truly lives. Perhaps, women have proven themselves right when they assert that what men could do, they could also do.

Standing Arguments about Women in the Armed Forces

Worldwide, women are now allowed to enter military service. Taking the lead from Western cultures like the United States and the United Kingdom, many countries and governments are now recognizing the potential and helpful role women could take in the armed forces. However, it is not surprising that their presence in the military is still a cause for controversy and debates. Are women supposed to be in the service? Why should not they be? This is the modern age and for some time, feminists have been actively asserting their potential to do what their men counterparts could do.

There are usual arguments that are presented and cited whenever there are debates about women in the military. These arguments were combined from those who favor entry of women in the military and from those who oppose the idea. Take note that most of such arguments are focusing on physical issues, differing mentalities, and gender sensitivity. Here are several of those most commonly used and cited arguments.

Physical issues

In general, nature made women anatomy different compared to men. Thus, many argue that women are not as physically strong as men. So how could they be effective in combatant situations? It is also a fact that women’s skeletons are less dense, more prone to possible breakage. In aviation, it could be that women’s bodies would also not be very adept in handling increased g-forces as experienced and encountered by combat pilots. Health issues are not far behind. Many submarine services cite this aspect as a usual reason why they avoid hiring women soldiers. A study has found that female soldiers are smaller and shorter on the average than men with a 50% less upper body strength and up to 30% less aerobic capacity.

Psychological concerns

Many conventional and conservative soldiers assert that they could not in any way easily trust women soldiers to perform duties that require trust on fellow soldiers. Romantic relationships that could possibly arise are also being taken against women. Such relationships between men and women in operations could possible disrupt any unit’s capability to fight. There is also a fear that women might suddenly get pregnant during the height of a combat operation. Some people could not help but cite the psychological and emotional swings that are experienced by women during or around their monthly periods. Women are also known to be far more emotional and soft than men.

Discrimination and tradition

Exclusion of women in military combat tasks is considered by many as the last bastion of gender or sex discrimination. Many believe that female soldiers are forbidden to take part in major roles in the armed forces due to the prevailing traditionalist views of military as a profession. Thus, many of such people could argue that the equal opportunities legislations should not apply to the military.

But is it the modern times. Despite these issues, it should be noted that women are still very much welcome in the military, which is starting to openly appreciate their role in succeeding military services.

Scholarships for US Armed Forces Recruits

The military is always in need of quality, smart, and courageous people. That is why high importance is bestowed to armed forces recruitment. It is jut logical that the US military is offering many perks and privileges to students who would decide to join the service and enroll in the military training schools and centers around. There are recruiting programs in place that include various scholarships that are exclusively offered to students who are aiming to get into the military. Some of such programs and offerings are provided to students who are sons or daughters of military men or women.

The Montgomery GI Bill is on top of the list of such programs. Under the program, the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps are mandated to provide and offer cash education as incentives to encourage students to join then serve our of duty. The scholarship program provides for up to three years (36 months in all) of educational benefits and assistance for college, technical, business, and vocational courses. The program is also extended to job training and apprenticeship, flight training, and even correspondence courses. The benefits of the program could also be used by military personnel while in active duty or right after an honorable discharge.

The Armed Forces’ Tuition Assistance program enables enlisted service members to enroll in specific course in accredited universities, colleges, high schools, and even technical centers. This scholarship program could shoulder up to full of overall costs of courses and up to another full of costs in obtaining a high school education. The branches of the US military could also provide tuition assistance to add to what a scholar may already receive from the Montgomery program discussed above. To qualify for the program, you should agree to serve the government or the military for at least six years.

Student Loan Repayment Program is aiming to help students to avoid problems regarding tuition fees. There could be cumulative caps on amount repaid. The requirement could be easier to attain. You just need to score at least 50 on the qualifying exam to be facilitated. The program should be requested and processed at the time of enlistment or in some cases reenlistment. Eligible loans could be covered, but not defaulted loans of students. Payments made under the program could be categorized at taxable income.

Community College of the US Air Force offers two-year education assistance to enlisted personnel. The program is offering different specific scholarships that would eventually climb up to owning an associate degree in up to 70 technical and scientific fields. The program could shoulder about 100% of the overall expenses of college courses made through the Tuition Assistance Program.

It is not a problem get an education now. Most of the scholarships provided by the military would require equivalent number of years of services in the Armed Forces. It could never be a bad deal. If you are a little tight on the budget or you are short of it, apply for scholarships now.

Romantic Relationships in the Armed Forces

Is it possible for military personnel to fall in love with each other while on duty? You must be watching too much daytime soap operas or fictional movies. The idea of falling in love while under the military service is somehow unique and challenging, needless to say romantic. There is no need to touch on issues of homosexuality. While there are speculated cases of same-sex relationships and intimacies, straight or heterosexual relationships could happen. That is because women are now allowed to enter the military. It is not in any way surprising.

It has always been raised that inclusion of women in the service could possibly disrupt esprit de corps of any combat unit. In the past, this was one of the main reasons why women were not allowed to participate in front-line combat operations. Romantic relationships could also arise between men and women in the front lines. When this happens, their focus and motivation is disrupted. The effect: their overall performance could be affected to the negative. Relationships, particularly the romantic types, are also calling for too many arguments between men and women. In the process of such romantic fights, the duty and responsibility to the profession could inevitably suffer.

Does it happen? It is possible so there is no doubt it could occur. While on duty, men and women in service could be attracted with each other. Their remoteness from their respective families and loved ones could make them grow closer together. Men and women fall in love even at the direst and most unique circumstances. Where there is danger, there is excitement and love. Love sprouts at the most unexpected venues and that could be in the place of duty. There is no direct policy or provision that prohibits men and women in the military service to fall in love with each other.

What if the love goes to intimacy? It could be more complicated. Human psychology has it that sexual activities and tension could very well affect concentration and focus at work. Both men and women could be at fault here. Their colleagues could also find it somehow awkward that they are intimate while in line of duty. The issue of privacy could also be raised. Because they are in groups, there could be more embarrassment and awkwardness when it comes to issues that touch on the privacy of intimate, romantic moments.

There is another form of love in the armed forces. This one is nobler and more essential. It is love of country. Military men and women should have that undying and unconditional love to the state and to the profession so that they could perform and do their duties better. No other form of love could exceed that, at least in the military.

This kind of love governs every action related to the post and the job commitment. If you are aiming to join the armed forces, assess yourself and find out if you have it. If you do, then you are more than qualified to apply in the service.

Perks for the Armed Forces

Military men and women surely deserves perks and benefits. They are hard working, plus they have endured so much just to be where they are today. The responsibility they carry as a burden is so heavy that every citizen of the nation should be thankful to them. The armed forces is offering many perks and benefits that would serve as advantages for deciding to commit a lifetime in the military. These perks and benefits range from material things to the more attractive moral ones.

First, military men and women instantly enjoy respect and admiration of people in all aspects. Soldiers are being looked up to because of their stature as freedom fighters and defenders of the country and of the government. Military men and women always emphasize that the admiration and high regards they receive from people are most enjoyable and are far better than all the material things that are offered to them by the state as incentives to their services and commitment.

Second, the armed forces has authority. They have the great responsibility to make sure no internal and external threat could harm or destruct the country, the government, and the people. The law is vesting them several specific authorities that they must observe and use in emergency and complicated situations.

Third, they are entitled to lavish and truly comfortable holiday breaks, though timing and frequency could vary depending on situations. Everybody needs a break. That is why vacation holidays are considered important.

Then, the armed forces even offer scholarships as incentives to students who may consider building their careers with the military. It is not a problem get an education now. Most of the scholarships provided by the military would require equivalent number of years of services in the Armed Forces. It could never be a bad deal. If you are a little tight on the budget or you are short of it, apply for such scholarships now. These are also offered to children of military personnel.

A special day is allotted for military personnel---the Armed Forces Day.

Issues Surrounding the Armed Forces

The armed forces is an organization that is highly regarded in all countries. That is why many are looking up to military men and women. Unknown to many, there are still many confounding controversies and issues that are surrounding the institution and its members. The military is a group that is composed of different people with various demographics and personalities. Differences could bring about standing conflicts and issues that are bogging and affecting overall military operations somehow.

There are just too many concerns and woes. It is best for men and women in the service to be silent and address issues effectively on their own. In history, issues have troubled the institution, which has also succeeded in taking reforms and introducing measures that are considered solutions to problems and compromising situations. Here are several of the most usual and heavy-weighing issues that have always been thrown to the way of the military.

Women in the military

Since time immemorial, there always has been a double standard with regards to the entry of women to the military service. In the past, the practice was not allowed. But because it is the modern times, more and more women are getting into the service. They have been proving that there should not be any issue in their participation.

For the longest time, roles played by women in the military have always been full of controversies.

Gay men and women in the service

Some fresh news before we get started on this one. In 2009, a 22-year old gay man got the chance to be featured in the front cover of the prestigious Armed Forces of the UK magazine. That was nine years after the gay ban on the local military was lifted. Still, the news about the gay solider on the magazine became a hot issue. That means that people are still considering presence of gay men and women in service a big deal. Or they could be just being trivial. Either way, it is important to note that the military is evolving. It is continuously improving itself to be better and more righteous in the eyes of all people.

Is there issue on sexuality of soldiers? There are, apparently. Many people still think gay men and effeminate and are weaker compared to heterosexuals. The issue of decency and promiscuity is also raised. But through time, it has been proven that there is no valid basis for such concerns. Gay men and women are equally competitive, competent, strong, decent, and reliable just like their ‘straight’ counterparts and colleagues. They could very well help bolster the image and functionality of the armed forces.

Homosexuality is No Issue at UK Armed Forces

In January 2000, the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces has made a landmark and historic action. For the longest time, the organization was homophobic in nature. On the 13th of January, 2000, the body opened up to welcome and embrace gay men and women who are more than willing to get into the military service. The organization finally lifted its gay ban so that lesbians and gays could serve with utmost priced and certain distinction alongside heterosexual counterparts and colleagues. It was historic. Many soldiers and governments from all over the world watched and observed how the British forces did it.

The repeal of the ban was considered a critically and significantly important victory for many human rights advocates who have always fought for freedom and equality in all sectors of the society. Above all, it was sweet victory for the numerous gay men and women who have waited centuries and decades just to see it happen. While it is true that the act was not entirely welcomed by many elements in the British military establishment, more are clearly in favor of the landmark action. It was inspiring, providing inspiration and role model for all other armed forces to imitate and idolize.

Is there a need for further debate? Surely, there would always be arguments. This is because many people and military personnel are still holding the traditional belief and standpoint that the army and the military is not meant for gay men. It is a matter of heated debate. No one would easily accept defeat of his or her own opinion. But since the gay ban was already lifted, oppositionists and critics of the landmark action could not do anything but to stand by and justify their points and opinions. The gay men and women in service are now under further scrutiny.

Is there truly equality in the armed forces? There is now, based on the lifting of the ban. But many advocates and observers note that as long as the issue is still being debated and argued, gay men and women in the military are expected to keep on doing better not just to excel but also to prove their worth in service. They still carry the greater burden to show to everyone that they deserve to be where they are right now. The pressure is not as great in heterosexual or straight military men and women.

HM Armed Forces

A country’s governance is very important in indicating the path that it will take for a period of time. The leadership that will be given to the people will gravely affect the country’s economic stability and global competitiveness. These concepts and its security are very vital in assuring the propagation of such nation. In lieu with this let’s take a look at one of the long standing armed forces in the world.

The armed force of the United Kingdom has been accorded with so many names like His/Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, the British Armed Forces, and at times within legal circles the Armed Forces of the Crown. It embraces three main divisions which include an air force, an army, and a navy. The constituent members of this armed force are composed of both professional and volunteer personnel. It has been considered as one of the largest military organization in Europe and fourth highest in terms of expenditures next only to the US, China, and France. This is due mainly to the varying fluctuations in the currency exchange.

The British Forces is regarded as having the second highest power projection capacity next to the United States. It is also considered as having the technological means that can support the demands of advanced military operations. Its navy which is called the Royal Navy has the distinction, aside from the United States, of having the resources and initiative of getting huge aircraft carriers. The Royal Navy places second in aspects of gross tonnage. The United Kingdom air force is also having organized processing in order to acquire the latest models of aircraft in the global scene.

The members of the UK forces swear their allegiance, loyalty, and respect to the Commander-in-Chief who is the British monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The British constitutional law indicates that the armed forces are under the power of the crown but during times of peace it is maintained accordingly with the guidance of the parliament. This is why the existence of the standing armed forces is annually reviewed by the parliament and this body is the one that decides whether there is a need for such force. Based on long standing legal conventions the Prime Minister has de facto influence over the armed forces which are managed by the Defense Council of the Ministry of Defense.

The primary purpose of the British Armed Forces is to protect the UK and all its territories in the overseas level while promoting the country’s national security and welfare as well as keeping strides in supporting international peacekeeping affairs and actions. This armed force is an active mainstay and common participant in NATO affairs and such other coalition activities. The UK also has connections with the Five Power Defense Arrangements.

Recent activities and operations of the armed force include the likes of being part of the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars, the intervention in Sierra Leone in 2000, and the continuing efforts to maintain peaceful times within Balkans and Cyprus. The UK makes a full effort in keeping the competence and security within its international facilities and military outposts that are situated in areas of Brunei, Canada, Diego Garcia, Germany, Gibraltar, Kenya, Qatar, Cyprus, Belize, Ascension Island, and the Falkland Islands.

A nation’s armed forces are very significant in making sure that each of its dreams and aspirations for a prosperous and peaceful existence is made possible.

Help Commemorate Armed Forces Day

There is a special day designated in the United States for commemorating and appreciating al the sacrifices and contributions of the military to the society and to nation building. This is called the Armed Forces Day. It is regarded as an important occasion in the national scene. Observed every third week of May since 1949, the holiday is expected to continue giving people more insights and opportunities to realize how noble and how great the profession of the military could get.

Armed Forces Day is a special day assigned for the commemoration and recognition of soldiers’ unique and necessary sacrifices for the good of all.

The US is more sentimental of its veneration to its soldiers.

How could you help celebrate and commemorate this day more impressively and significantly? Here are some effective ideas that could help you freshen up and do uniquely but sensibly on the important holiday date. You do not need to be in the military to enjoy the celebration. There are just too many things you could do as an ordinary civilian.

First, consider attending an open house that is commemorating the Armed Forces Day. You could drop by the nearest military base that is nearest to you. While there, strive to talk to men and women who are on duty. Do not forget to be nice and friendly. As questions and then learn to like that you are selling and marketing.

Second, drop by an Armed Forces Day Blast. Such events are open to scouts so if you have one in the family you are set. You could also go with friends who have scout relatives if you do not have scouts in your family. Go see the pinewood, the sport competitions, the derbies, kite flying, and other activities.

You could have more meaningful alternatives. Contribute to preservation of historic forts in your area instead. You could always volunteer to cleanup or simply help in the overall holiday celebration or preparation. Lend your hand to the commemoration of the Armed Forces Day so you could exhibit your cooperation.

Flying Armed Forces

The skies are a beautiful testament of how good life can be when all things are calm and tranquil. But when dark clouds and black smoke start to block the horizon morale is easily degraded and people tend to look for someone or something they can turn to. In the United States people can look up for protection and security from one of the service of the Armed Forces which is called the Air Force.

The United States Air Force or USAF is the brand of armed force that deals with conflicts revolving around issues of aerial warfare and territorial conflicts. Before, the USAF was considered to be part of the United States Army, but then it separated to form an independent military branch on September 18, 1947. It is identified as the youngest division in the US Military.

The US Air Force offers critical capacities regarding aspects of Global Vigilance, Global Power, and Global Reach. It is composed of 5,573 manned aircraft in active service; around 180 unmanned combat aerial vehicles, 2,130 air-launched cruise missiles, and 450 intercontinental ballistic missiles. Its manpower resource is comprised of 327,452 personnel who are on active duty, 115,299 within the Selected and Individual Ready Reserves, and 106,700 as part of the Air National Guard. There are also around 171,313 civilian personnel employed in the Air Force.

The Department of the Air Force is under the authority of a civilian Secretary of the Air Force who has the task of facilitating all the policy and administrative affairs of the organization. The Department of the Air Force is considered to be part of the Department of Defense which is led by the Secretary of Defense. The officer who has the highest rank within the Department of the Air Force is named as the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

The National Security Act of 1947 states the general objective of the service which says that the USAF was organized in order to undergo organized and equipped training to serve in purposeful offensive and defensive air operations. The Air Force is tasked to prepare necessary means that can be employed in order to eliminate the existence of war as well as coordinate with other agencies and act on mobilized plans for the promotion of peacetime components.

In accordance with the US Code the USAF has the purpose involving the preservation of peace and security and provision of defense to the US, its territories, commonwealths, and possessions. It also has obligations to support national policies, implement national objectives, and overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that compromise the peace and safety of the United States. At present, the stated mission of the USAF can be summarized as fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace.

The National Search and Rescue Plan appointed the USAF as the one responsible for keeping close attention to aeronautical search and rescue within the continental US with the exception of Alaska. It works hand in hand with the coast guard to maintain Joint Rescue Coordination Centers. There are also instances when the Air Force can be assigned to aeronautical responsibilities outside that of the US.

Peace should be present all over the boundaries and territories of a nation. It doesn’t matter whether it is on land, water, or the sky. What really matters is that there is coordinated and organized effort from each nation’s armed forces.

Continental Armed Forces

The United States is considered as one of the most powerful nations in the world. This status can be attributed to its continuous thriving in aspects of economy, governance, health care, and defense. The armed forces of this country are composed of proud men and women who are able and willing to offer protection to their beloved motherland at all times. Let’s take a bit of time and identify one of its major services, the US Army.

The United States Army is the branch of the US armed forces that is mainly tasked to overlook all the affairs surrounding land-based military endeavors. It is identified as the oldest and largest division of the US forces and is part of seven groups that offer uniformed services. The current generation of the Army is a descendant of the Continental Army which was established on June 14, 1775 in order to resolve the conflicts brought about by the Revolutionary War. At the conclusion of the war, the Congress paved the way for the transformation of the disbanded Continental Army into the US Army in June 14, 1784. Since the present Army generation traces its roots on the Continental Army its date of inception is patterned on the date on which the latter was founded.

The Army was established in order to provide the needed forces and capabilities as supplement to the National Security and Defense Strategies. The control and operation of this organization is facilitated by the Department of the Army which is one of the three service departments composing the Department of Defense. The civilian authority is called as the Secretary of the Army while the highest ranking military official in the department is designated as the Chief of Staff unless the Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is an officer in the Army.

Basically, the US Army is composed of three vital components such as the active component, the Regular Army, and two reserve components. The pair of reserves is the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. These reserve components are made up of part-time soldiers who engage in training once per month under a program known as the Battle Assembly or Unit Training Assemblies or UTAs. They also perform annual trainings twice or thrice with a year.

The Regular Army and the Army Reserve are both maintained under Title 10 of the United States Code while the National Guard is maintained under Title 32. Despite being trained, facilitated, and equipped as an important element of the US Army, the Army National Guard is under the authority of the individual state and territorial governors, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia specifically when it is not called on for federal service. However, there are instances when the National Guard can have federal influences and status upon the order to president even if it is against the wishes of the governor.

When the Goldwater-Nichols Act was mandated in 1986, the operational control of this service was directed to follow a chain of command from the President to the Secretary of Defense and then to the Unified Combatant Commanders who have authority over all units within the function area. In this way, the Chief of Staff for each service has the responsibility to train and facilitate his own service component.

It is significant that the armed forces maintain harmony and safety within land areas since these are the immediate locations in which a lot of people are situated.

Complementing Armed Forces

The armed forces are a wide network of agencies and services that provide for a certain country’s need of security and defense. Its network is also used in order to build wide array of connections internationally and relay effective communications towards neighboring countries in order to prevent misunderstandings and unwanted times of war. In other words these forces are also means of diplomacy but when the time comes that their designated country is at risk rest assure that these systematic bodies work together in order to achieve what is good for their nation.

Speaking of collaborating in order to achieve the common good, there is a branch of the US Armed Forces which works hand in hand with the US Navy in order to perform its duties. The United States Marine Corps is tasked for the provision of force projection from the sea. It utilizes the mobile facilities of the US Navy in order to execute combined-arms task forces. Within the civilian authority system of the United States military, the Marine Corps is said to be an element of the Department of the Navy. This is the reason why the two agencies are frequently working together in times of training and logistics purposes. But in the military structure of leadership, the Marine Corps is recognized as a separate brand.

On November 10, 1775 the act of Captain Samuel Nicholas involving the formation of two battalions composed of Continental Marines as part of the naval infantry triggered the placement of the Marine Corps within the circles of military service. Since then this brand of military has come a long way and has achieved a lot particularly at the dawn of the 20th century when its amphibious form of warfare proved to be effective.

This was primarily employed as the core concept during the Pacific campaigns revolving around WWII. As the middle phase of 20th century started to boil down the amphibious warfare ways of the marines have become a dominant theory of combat warfare and was essentially practiced in various regional crises. This gave the Marine Corp a significant place in promoting American foreing policies.

As of June 30, 2009, the USMC is composed of 203,557 Marines who are part of active duty and about 40,000 Marines on the reserve list. It is noted as the smallest figure in the United States Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. Despite posting little amounts and figures of manpower the Marine Corps is regarded as having a large degree of advantage on the armed forces of known military powers across the globe including that of the active duty Israel Defense Forces or even the whole of the British Army.

The Marine Corps can be described as highly cost effective. It is noted that the cost per member of the corps is 20,000 dollars less than the cost of the members from other military services. The entire force also has the elite distinction of being utilized in both major and hybrid combat environments. The Marines are said to have fulfilled the coverage of the entire Three Block War.

The Marine Corps may be small in figures but their hearts make up a lot for the difference thus paving the way for a very reliable and competitive form of contribution to the US Armed Forces.
